  • About DTS

    Established in 1993

Here at Dancin’ Time, we are celebrating our 30th anniversary in business! Kelly Jenkins Moreland founded DTS in 1992 alongside her then husband, Alfredo Jimenez. Kelly now runs the studios with the artistic direction from her daughter, Sierra Jimenez. Dancin’ Time offers classes in various styles such as ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, pointe, lyrical, musical theater, conditioning, and hip hop.

We are dedicated to bringing the highest quality of instruction to our students. Our instructors are carefully selected. We continue to attend special workshops to further our abilities and stay updated on the latest styles of dance and music. We are proud to say that we have had numerous of our former students venture out into the world of the performing arts and are either starting their internships or currently working as professionals.

    Kelly Jenkins Moreland

Though not one to brag about her accomplishments, Kelly grew up in Reno, NV where she began to dance at age 2. This is where she studied and taught until her career took her to new adventures. While in college, the studio she taught dance at got a call for dancers at the MGM Grand. At 18, she was hired for her first professional dance job.

Kelly then went on to dance on the “S.S. Norway” with Jean Ann Ryan Productions for 8 months at sea. After her stay on the ships she went back to the MGM for a short run and got a call to head for Madrid, Spain, where she would dance as a lead at La Scala Hotel and meet her dance partner, Alfredo Jimenez. After that, Kelly started dancing and choreographing for producer/choreographer Ricardo Ferrante and eventually ended up performing and choreographing on a Saturday night variety show on Spanish television called Sabado Noche.

While dancing her way from Morocco to Northern Spain with her own touring company, Kelly was also working for Jean Ann Ryan Productions, as one of the lead dancers in her show in Bal Harbor, Florida and later teaching the choreography for Cruise Ships and choreographing their show at the Grand Hyatt in Seoul Korea. She continued to tour Spain with her own company until 1992, when her and her dance partner, Alfredo, decided to retire from the profession while on top and always being left with happy memories of their accomplishments.

Knowing she eventually wanted to open a dance studio, Kelly and her family moved to Hagerstown. This is where she opened Dancin’ Time Studios, (originally on Mount Aetna Road). She was the owner of The Washington County Playhouse for 11 years as well, but gave it up to dedicate more of her time to her own children and the students at the studio.

Along with the studio, Kelly also taught dance for 15 years at Hagerstown Community College, as well as choreographing for their theater department. She was also the choreographer for the North Hagerstown High School Show Choir & Musical Theater Department from 2003 - 2014.

The studio is now going into its 29th year of business and is dedicated to bringing the very best to the city of Hagerstown.

"ALWAYS REACH FOR YOUR DREAMS, NO MATTER HOW FAR AWAY THEY MAY SEEM, BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE IF YOU JUST BELIEVE."

    Jazz

is a classification shared by a broad range of dance styles. Before the 1950s, jazz dance referred to dance styles that originated from African American vernacular dance. In the 1950s, a new genre of jazz dance—modern jazz dance—emerged, with roots in Caribbean traditional dance. Every individual style of jazz dance has roots traceable to one of these two distinct origins. As in most forms of dance, technique is the foundation for all modern jazz dance movement. In particular, jazz dancers benefit from a sound working knowledge of ballet technique and, consequently, hip hop dance curriculum commonly includes ballet training.

    broken image

    Ballet

a classical dance form demanding grace and precision and employing formalized steps and gestures set in intricate, flowing patterns to create expression through movement.

    broken image

    Hip Hop

refers to dance styles primarily danced to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. This includes a wide range of styles notably breaking, locking, and popping which were developed in the 1970s by Black and Latino Americans. What separates hip-hop dance from other forms of dance is that it is often freestyle (improvisational) in nature and hip-hop dancers frequently engage in battles—formal or informal freestyle dance competitions.

    broken image

    Lyrical

has its primary basis in ballet, combining the many technical elements of classical ballet with the freedom and airier aspects of jazz, contemporary and modern dance. Lyrical dance is expressive, simultaneously subtle and dynamic, focused on conveying musicality andemotion through movement. It is a combination of intricate, highly technical, and pedestrian/naturalistic moves. It is commonly set to popular music with vocals as well as rich instrumental portions of a pop song. Lyrical inspires choreographers and dancers to use movement to interpret music and express emotion.

    broken image

    Tap

is a form of dance characterized by using ones shoes, as well as the floor, as a percussive instrument. As such, it is also commonly considered to be a musical form as well. Two major variations on tap dance exist, rhythm (Jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses more on the dance side, and is widely performed as a part of musical theater. Rhythm tap focuses instead on the musical side, and practitioners consider themselves to be a part of the Jazz tradition.

    broken image

    Pointe

is executed on special shoes to give a dancer the ability to dance on their toes. It is important that a dancer not start till the age of 12, when the most delicate bones of the feet have stopped growing.

    broken image

    Contemporary

is a genre of concert dance that employs compositional philosophy, rather than choreography, to guide unchoreographed movement. It uses dance techniques and methods found in ballet, modern dance and postmodern dance, and it also draws from other philosophies of movement that are outside the realm of classical dance technique.

    Conditioning

the development of physical fitness through the adaptation of the body and its various systems through an exercise program. At DTS our conditioning will include the PBT (Progressing Ballet Technique) curriculum. Students enrolled in this class will need to purchase additional equipment.
